Traditional brushed motors rely on physical carbon brushes to switch electrical currents in the rotor windings. Over time, friction, mechanical wear, electrical arcing, and carbon dust buildup diminish motor output and cause sudden failures. Brushless DC (BLDC) technology removes these physical commutators entirely, replacing them with electronic commutation logic governed by Hall effect sensors or sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) algorithms.
By using electronic commutation, BLDC motors generate significantly less thermal losses, achieving efficiency benchmarks above 85-90% compared to the 60-70% typical of brushed alternatives. This translates into longer runtimes in portable battery-powered gear, reduced heat dissipation requirements within sealed medical tools, and minimal electromagnetic interference (EMI)—a critical factor for electronics compliance and safety critical applications.
In highly intensive environments like automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or heavy-duty planetary drill systems, heat dissipation is the main source of stator degradation. In a BLDC architecture, the electromagnetic coils are positioned on the outer stator rather than the inner rotor.
